Saturday---A Time to Pray

Tomorrow thousands will be joining Texas Governor Rick Perry in Houston for a day of prayer.

We desperately need God's help and blessing. A quick glance at actual headlines this morning confirms what most of us already know.

  • "Dow Rallies Then Fades"

  • "58% of Work-age Americans Have Jobs--Lowest Since July 1983"

  • "Food Stamp Use Rises To Record 45.8 million"

  • "Market Panic Spreads Across The Globe"

  • NYT--"Time To Say It---'double dip'"

  • "Average Income Drops $3,500 From 2008"

  • "Rolling Toward Total Collapse"

And that's just today's news.

America is deeply in trouble. The headlines above, the relentless assault on morality, marriage, family and the sanctity of life are all symptoms of a moral and spiritual crises.

America is turning away from God. We need a great spiritual awakening.

There has been tremendous opposition against Gov. Perry in regard to tomorrow's prayer event at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Secularist and atheist groups have used intimidation and legal action in an attempt to stop the event.

Kelly Shackelford has written an excellent article about the opposition to the prayer event and prayer's historical significance in America titled, "Protesting Prayer." Please take a moment and read it.

There will be protesters at the prayer meeting tomorrow. The press will find them and give them coverage, elevating the efforts of the protesters while seeking to diminish the impact and importance of the prayer service, likely suggesting it is somehow politically motivated.

It isn't. Christians understand that the answer to our national crises is not a political one. We need a spiritual and moral solution.

I am not personally able to attend, although invited, but I plan to be there in spirit. Will you join with me and thousands, perhaps millions of others across our nation tomorrow as we pray for our country?

I sincerely believe this could be a turning point and historical marker in our nations history.

The biblical verses chosen to define the time of prayer is from the book of Joel:

"Even now, 'declares the Lord', return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and He relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave a blessing..." ( Joel 2: 12, 13, 14)

"And afterward, I will pour out my spirit on all people, Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions( v. 28)..."And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (v. 32).

The Word of the Lord.

May God help us.
