In Theaters Today--"An Abortion Romantic Comedy"

The Hollywood Reporter says, "In the upcoming Indie comedy 'Obvious Child', the film's main character doesn't shy away from her decision to have an abortion when she finds herself unexpectedly pregnant."

Instead, she finds a path of self discovery and empowerment by having the abortion.

Our prayers are with those who were injured in the shooting on Seattle Pacific University campus yesterday afternoon. Also, remember the family of the victim who has died.

Many of us have close ties to SPU. One of our daughters graduated from the university and I once served as Special Assistant to the President of Seattle Pacific University.

May God's strength and grace be with the faculty and students during this very difficult time.

The film's executive producer Gillian Robespierre says, "There has been no pressure from outside forces for her to waiver in the film's commitment to that story line."

Strong encouragement and plenty of money.

The media PR calls the film "hilarious" and "an unplanned journey of self discovery."

You would expect Planned Parenthood and NARAL to be "all in" on a film like this.

They are.

But the feature article in the New York Times is why I chose to write about this today.

The Hollywood Reporter, while fully supporting the film and its message, is suggesting there will likely be some "pressure from outside sources" ahead.

I hope to be one of those sources.

An "Abortion Romantic Comedy" is an oxymoron---possibly a new low for even Hollywood, yet it is being sold to the public as something akin to taking an aspirin for a headache, in a romantic, comedic setting.

Dishonest and deceptive.

No abortion has a happy ending---much less a hilarious one, and it cannot emotionally or mentally much less spiritually be "a journey of self-discovery and empowerment," as the film PR promises.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Tweeted--"Read All About It--incredibly funny, honest & smart movie about abortion."

Reproductive Sexual Health and Justice (RH), a pro-abortion organization, reports that "the film makers worked closely with Planned Parenthood to depict an abortion experience accurately and positively."

Planned Parenthood is not known for accuracy, and abortion is hardly known as a positive experience.

It's the New York Times that reveals what the film is really about.

The Times story reveals that the film is a reaction against movies like "Juno" and "Knocked Up" where unplanned pregnancies resulted in positive birth stories.

Robespierre, the producer, says those other films where the baby is not aborted "just didn't feel true."

In other words, she couldn't imagine letting her baby live. Knowing what we know about the abortion industry, that likely would actually feel "unreal" in the world of Planned Parenthood.

The NYT says, the "abortion romantic comedy represents a turning point for how the procedure [abortion], pregnancy and women are depicted on film."

Or in other words, the NYT says Donna, the pregnant women in the film, "does not consult the man who impregnated her during a one night stand" and "never wavers on her course of action."

The Times says, "The cameras also accompany her into the clinic."

Actress Jenny Slate, who plays the pregnant woman in the film, told Rolling Stone, "Our film is not an agenda movie in any way."

She says, "The whole point is that women have this procedure, and they should have it safely and its a part of life."

Every entertainment trade magazine I read is literally "giddy" and "gushing" over this movie.

Not only is this producer and her colleagues trying to put a "happy face" on killing an unborn, unwanted child, they are also trying to normalize it.

Abortion is not about life. It's about death. And narcissism.

It takes the life of the child and does, sometimes irreparable, emotional and physical damage to the woman.

Put this attempt at putting a happy face on abortion alongside the revelations of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist who is now serving 3 life sentences for murder.

There is a stark contrast. To quote the producer, this film "just doesn't feel true."

It isn't. It's a lie.

They do in fact have an agenda, regardless of their denials.

This article today also has an agenda.

  • Don't see the movie.
  • Don't let your kids see the movie.
  • Encourage others to not see the movie.
  • One night stands are not romantic and abortions are not funny.
  • Abortion is not normal, its barbaric.
  • Abortion is sin. Thou shall not kill.
  • Abortion has to do with self-centeredness and narcissism, not self discovery and empowerment. Or choice.

I'm reminded of an ancient, but enduring Truth: "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes. And clever in their own sight" (Isaiah 5:20-21).
