Progressive Utopia: Life in a "Potemkin Village"

Hillary Clinton famously said, "It takes a Village."

It was Grigory Potemkin who actually illustrated what that village of the far left progressives looks like, and how it functions.

It's a facade. It's a series of facades. It's storefronts. It's citizens are actors. It's purpose is deception.

Potemkin, Empress Catherine II's favorite lover and governor in Crimea, is said to have erected a fake portable village along the banks of the Dnieper River in order to fool the foreign ambassadors who were guests of the Empress.

As the Empress and her guests would travel each day by river barge, they would visit yet another thriving village on the banks of the Dnieper River.

Potemkin and the Empress had a secret.

The far left progressive movement is also building fake facades calling them freedom, national security, fairness, equality, choice, rights and progress. They are none of that.

While the progressive parts of the village are often manufactured on the banks of the Hudson River, they are shipped across the nation to be erected in classrooms, board rooms, news rooms and living rooms.

Grigory Potemkin was said to be Empress Catherine II's favorite lover. She had to know what he was doing, but didn't mind because it was effective, and the end justified the means.

The Empress, with her court and several foreign ambassadors, made an unprecedented six month tour of Crimea in 1787.

Knowing that war was imminent---what came to be known as the Russo-Turkish War, the task was to impress the ambassadors---Russia's allies, with the progress that had been made in Crimea since the Russian takeover. And to garner their support for the coming war.

To help accomplish this, Potemkin would set up "mobile villages" on the banks of the Dnieper River. As soon as the barge carrying the Empress and ambassadors arrived, Potemkin's men, dressed as peasants, would populate the village. Once the barge left, the village was disassembled, then rebuilt down stream overnight.

The deception worked. The allies joined Russia in the war.

Some progressive "scholars" seek to discount the story as myth. Whether or not, the story "is" about myth.

The "Potemkin Village" defines and illustrates how far left secular progressivism works.

Seton Motely, writing for Red State, said yesterday, "The modern Left is renowned for erecting Potemkin-esque faux support and supporters for its policy ridiculousness."

He directs his readers to "fake feet in the street"---fake mobs that appear across the country under the pretense of being legitimate demonstrators wanting the public to hear of their plight.

He says these are "Boom times for Rent-a Mobs."

"Just days after Black Friday protests against Walmart stores, many of the same agitators will be out again on Thursday protesting fast food restaurants in New York City and across the country," he says, "And we're supposed to believe these are 'organic' worker 'uprisings' against exploitative employers; in fact they're all bank rolled by Big Labor and its allies."

He notes that the Ferguson protesters turned from protesting the racial issue, to protesting the people who hired them to protest---why?--- because they didn't get paid.

His story is fascinating and covers Acorn and the Left's voter fraud to Network Neutrality.

However, I believe the even greater hoax being foisted on the citizens of America has to do with the facades of morality being built along the river of life.

Last fall America learned that Obamacare, that will substantially remake, if not destroy the American medical system as well as redistribute wealth, was a Potemkin-esque facade---a bate and switch.

How did we find out? MIT Professor Jonathan Gruber, the architect of Obamacare, explained it all on video, telling a number of his audiences that they had to mislead the citizens in order to get the healthcare plan passed. You will recall he mocked us average Americans calling us "stupid."

The Emperor, or rather president, went along with the ruse until Gruber was exposed by the videos, then claimed he barely knew him.

Marc Thiessen wrote about it at the time. I recommend his article. Read it with the Potemkin story in mind.

Lifesitenews published an important article this past May regarding the so-called "gay-gene."

They reported, "Most Americans, 51%, now believe that homosexuals are 'born that way'."

However, science says they are not.

Life Site references 8 major studies from around the world that have found homosexuality is not a genetic condition.

However, activists have created a "Potemkin Village" that deceives the public.

President Obama has repeatedly told America he has recently evolved on the issue of marriage, while his long time close adviser David Axelrod wrote in his book that the President Obama supported same-sex marriage a long time ago, but felt it was not the appropriate time to come out with his true beliefs.

Presidential candidate Marco Rubio said just last month he does not support same-sex marriage, "but," he does believe they "are born that way."

So persuasive are these facades that some professing Christians are willing to deny biblical teaching on the behavior to prove they are not bigots---that they are demonstrating God's love, by affirming the behavior---that they are tolerant.

The deception is significant, causing people to "exchange the Truth for the lie."

Matthew Clark with ACLJ recently shared a letter from a mother to her soon to be aborted child. Matthew said, "It's one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever read."

Most of us will agree.

She writes:

I am sorry that this is goodbye. I'm sad that I'll never get to meet you.
You could have your father's eyes and my nose and we could make our own traditions, be a family. But, Little Thing, we will meet again. I promise that the next time I see that little blue plus, the next time you are in the same reality as me, I will be ready for you.
Little Thing, I want you to be happy. More than I want good things for myself, I want the best things for the future. That's why I can't be your mother right now. . . .
I love you, Little Thing, and I wish the circumstances were different. I promise I will see you again, and next time, you can call me Mom.

Grigory Potemkin was not the original deceiver, nor are those of our times original. They reflect the original.

St. Paul described the original like this: "And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light" ( II Corinthians 11:14).

His message is that Satan capitalizes on a Christian's love of the light in order to deceive him or her. He portrays that which is evil as good, that which is wrong as right.

And these are the facades along the river of life.

Be Discerning. Be Vigilant. Be Informed. Be Prayerful.
