Leading Psychiatrists to Gays: "No, You Are Not Born 'That Way' "

A major new report published yesterday in the journal The New Atlantis, reveals that most everything the media, entertainment, and public education is telling you about sexual orientation and gender identity is wrong.

The scientists say, "Some of the most frequently heard claims about sexuality and gender are not supported by scientific evidence."

In the mind of the secular progressive, homosexuals are equivalent to African Americans.

To the progressive, ethnicity and deviant sexual behavior both merit Civil Rights.

African Americans should be outraged---some are---most are apparently not.

In the minds of the scientists---psychiatrists, epidemiologists, and sociologists--- who just completed the in-depth study, the secular progressives are wrong. Dead wrong.

The facts are not with the homosexual advocates. And those who enable them.

Co-authored by two of the nation's leading scholars on mental health and sexuality, the 143-page report discusses over 200 peer-reviewed studies in the biological, psychological, and social sciences, painstakingly documenting what scientific research "shows and does not show" about sexuality and gender.

In reviewing the study, Ryan T. Anderson says, "The major takeaway, as the editor of the journal explains, is that 'some of the most frequently heard claims about sexuality and gender are not supported by evidence'."

I have drawn from Anderson, the Report itself, and other news sources for my comments.

Anderson believes these are the 4 most important conclusions from the report.

  1. The belief that sexual orientation is an innate, biologically fixed human property—that people are ‘born that way’—is not supported by scientific evidence.
  2. Likewise, the belief that gender identity is an innate, fixed human property independent of biological sex—so that a person might be a "man trapped in a woman’s body" or "a woman trapped in a man’s body"—is not supported by scientific evidence.
  3. Only a minority of children who express gender-atypical thoughts or behavior will continue to do so into adolescence or adulthood. There is no evidence that all such children should be encouraged to become transgender, much less subjected to hormone treatments or surgery.
  4. Non-heterosexual and transgender people have higher rates of mental health problems (anxiety, depression, suicide), as well as behavioral and social problems (substance abuse, intimate partner violence) than the general population. Discrimination alone does not account for the entire disparity.

The Report, "Sexuality and Gender: Findings from the Biological, Psychological and Social Sciences" is co-authored by Dr. Lawrence Mayer and Dr. Paul McHugh. Mayer is a scholar-in-residence in the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University and a professor of statistics and biostatistics at Arizona State University.

McHugh, whom the editor of The New Atlantis describes as "arguably the most important American psychiatrist of the last half-century" is a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University and was for 25 years the psychiatrist-in-chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The report focuses exclusively on what scientific research shows and does not show.

Clearly, public policy under the Obama Administration has advanced the homosexual agenda as science, when in fact, it is not.

One example is the current issue regarding bathrooms in public schools.

Yesterday, a federal judge released an order (dated Sunday) in Texas blocking, at least for now, Obama's directive to US public schools that transgender students must be allowed to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their chosen gender identity.

School began in Texas yesterday. Had Texas public schools failed to comply with the demands of this administration, they could have lost up to $10 billion in federal money.

US District Judge Reed O'Connor ruled that the federal education law, Title IX, "is not ambiguous" about sex being defined as "the biological and anatomical differences between male and female students as determined at their birth."

Texas had been joined in filing the lawsuit by--Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah and Georgia, and the Republican Governors of Maine, Mississippi, and Kentucky.

The president has told the courts that recipients of federal education dollars "are clearly on notice" if they do not embrace his policy.

We now know the homosexual agenda is based on something other than science.

The homosexual community's response was predictable.

Paul Castillo, a Dallas attorney who represents the homosexual "rights" group Lambda---a group that advocates for legalizing man-boy relationships among other things---said the ruling is a continuation of attacks on transgender people.

Who is attacking whom?

One of the consistent themes of this report is that science does not support the claim that "gender identity" is fixed property, independent of biological sex, but rather a combination of biological, environmental, and experiential factors likely shape how individuals experience themselves when it comes to sex and gender.

The report also discusses the reality of neuroplasticity; that all of our brains can and do change throughout our lives (especially, but not only, in childhood) in response to our behavior and experiences. These changes in the brain can, in turn, influence future behavior.

Clearly, this gives more concern over the Obama administration's recent transgender school policies.

Beyond the privacy and safety concerns, there is also the potential that Obama's policies will result in prolonged identification by confused children who clearly need help---thus further accelerating, not helping the problem among children who would have naturally grown out of their confusion.

The report reviews rigorous research showing that "only a minority of children who experience cross-gender identification will continue to do so into adolescence or adulthood."

The report notes, "There is no evidence that all children who express gender-atypical thoughts or behavior should be encouraged to become transgender."

But that's exactly what's happening. Homosexuality and transgender confusion is so elevated and celebrated in our culture---especially in public schools, that young children sometimes even see the issue as a way of getting attention.

Or in their temporary confusion, they are easily indoctrinated by those who claim to be "helping" them.

While Obama is assaulting the culture, the "advocates," under the guise of "helpful practitioners" are assaulting the children through indoctrination.

The study also shows that people who identify as LGBT face higher risks of adverse physical and mental outcomes such as "depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and most alarmingly, suicide.

The report also contradicts the claims of the US Supreme Court's so-called "gay marriage" ruling last year.

There is no scientific evidence that anyone is "born that way."

Barrack, Hillary, and Lady Gaga, along with a host of others have pushed that narrative. Many have fallen in line with it, including some leaders in the Republican Party.

But science does not support it.

In writing for the majority in last year's Supreme Court ruling on marriage, Justice Kennedy wrote, "Their immutable nature dictates that same-sex marriage is their only real path to this profound commitment" and "in more recent years have psychiatrists and other recognized that sexual orientation is both a normal expression of human sexuality and immutable."

There is no scientific evidence to support that claim, made by the highest court in our land.

Both Mayer and McHugh noted in the study, "Everyone---scientists and physicians, parents and teachers, lawmakers and activists---deserve access to accurate information about sexual orientation and gender identity."

This is another incident where the truth has been exchanged for the lie.
