White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders harshly criticized Democratic lawmakers this weekend for flying to Puerto Rico for a political event and play date on the beach---with 109 lobbyists and corporate executives from R.J. Reynolds, Facebook, Comcast, Amazon, PhRMA, Microsoft, Intel, Verizon and the National Education Association.
This, while tens of thousands of federal workers missed a payday.
Oh, the hypocrisy.
Sanders Tweeted, "Democrats in Congress are so alarmed about federal workers not getting paid they're partying on the beach instead of negotiating compromise to reopen the government and secure the border."
The retreat comes, she noted, on the 24th day of the partial government shutdown.
Democratic lawmakers, like New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez pictured on the beach with his friends, hardly appears to be concerned about the less fortunate back home.
The Washington Examiner reported that the Democratic leaders were also playing with the Puerto Rican cast of "Hamilton." Yesterday, our public servants attended a performance of the play.
There are 3.6 lobbyists for every lawmaker at the retreat.
However, while her colleagues "fiddled" on the beach, Hillary was standing watch on the front lines at home.
On Saturday, she tweeted that "Americas can't afford another day" of what is now the longest running government shutdown in US history.
She warned,
"The costs are already high; People are missing paychecks, losing business, or working without pay. Our national parks are overrun with trash. The FDA and FBI warn of the harm to our food safety and national security."
I doubt that most of us really care where the progressive elite go to play---or even when. It's the hypocrisy that's bothersome.
Although Nancy Pelosi was scheduled to go on the outing, she decided against it at the last minute. Perhaps it was because she had just spent a week in Hawaii, while President Trump and staff stayed at the White House, just in case the Democrats wanted to meet.
It seems their alarm is selective. They'll be back in DC tomorrow raging over the horrible "government shutdown" and the "immoral wall."
"Crises," they will shout, "Crises."
However, Art Arthur with the Center for Immigration Studies says Democrats seem more concerned about pleasing their far-left base than improving security on the US-Mexican border. He says they also have their eye on the 2020 elections.
Arthur also says there's the issue of newly elected, far-Left Democrats, who were elected due to their vows to oppose Trump at every turn and push to impeach him.
The far-Left are mocking the president because they believe they have forced him to compromise for a "steel" wall rather than a concrete one. And they say, Mexico is not paying for it.
The looming political problem for the Left is the fact---and sometimes facts are lonely warriors, that prominent Democrats once voted for a 2006 bill that authorized miles of new fencing on the border. Now they are calling the very thing they voted for "immoral," "too expensive," and "not effective."
Arthur says this causes the president to appear more and more reasonable, while the Left appears more and more unreasonable.
He says he believes this stand-off will ultimately become a political liability for the Democrats, as it becomes a "no-lose" situation for the president and those who support him.
