A resolute Republican Party convened its national convention last night, less than 48 hours after an assassination attempt against presumptive presidential nominee Donald J. Trump.
Amid uncertainty about the motivation for the attack and escalating political tension in the country, party leaders and others have also called for calm as the party nominates former President Trump as its candidate for the nation’s highest office.
Trump has set the tone for the event with a personal statement posted on social media:
"It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening."

More than 2,400 Republican delegates, thousands of invited guests, and hundreds of journalists attended the beginning of the four-day convention. In all, some 50,000 people are in Milwaukee for the event.
Audrey Gibson-Cicchino of the U.S. Secret Service said on Sunday that the convention already has the highest security designation the federal government issues and that she is confident adequate provisions are in place. “We’re not anticipating any changes to our operational security plan for this event.”
However, multiple law enforcement officers from various agencies posted in the downtown area on Sunday, July 14, said that security arrangements were evolving based on changes made by the Secret Service in the wake of the July 13 shooting.
Up to 10 officers were posted in groups at various locations around and within the secure perimeter of Fiserv Forum, the convention site. Squads of five to six officers patrolled the area on bicycles.
Officers from various municipalities, including Milwaukee's city and county, are providing security for the event. State police officers from other states, including Indiana and New Jersey, are also on duty. Members of the Transportation Security Administration man pedestrian screening checkpoints around the arena.
President Joe Biden is calling for "calm discourse," which generally means "quietly accept the agenda of the far left so-called progressive movement."
Before he was escorted from the platform in Pennsylvania by Secret Service agents, former President Trump, blood streaked across his face, paused to pump his fist to the crowd and voiced the words, “Fight! Fight! Fight!”
The next day the former president repeated his intention both to continue his political struggle and to appear at the convention where he will be formally nominated on the final day of the event, Thursday, July 18.
He wrote on social media, “In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win. I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”
However, it was these words that set the tone for the event this week.
Former President Trump said he believes God shielded him from assassination during a rally in Pennsylvania, a sentiment echoed by several prominent Republicans.
“It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” he wrote in a Truth Social post on Sunday. “We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness.”
Later in the post, Trump expressed love for the families of the other shooting victims, including a firefighter who died and two others who were injured.
“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win,” he wrote in his post.
Takeaway
Many other elected officials also saw the supernatural in the events in Pennsylvania.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) wrote on X that “God protected President Trump.”
Rep. Carlos Antonio Gimenez (R-Fla.) agreed with the sentiment, telling Fox News that the former president wasn’t gravely wounded or killed by “the grace of God,” while Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) said “divine intervention” and God’s “protective hand” foiled the assassination attempt.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) wrote that it was God who “protected President Trump yesterday,” while he also told NBC News that he hopes politicians can tone down the political rhetoric following the assassination attempt.
“Yesterday there were miracles, and I think the hand of God was there too,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) told Fox News on Sunday, noting that he himself was shot and wounded during a congressional baseball team event in 2017. “You can just see one centimeter over and we’re having a very different conversation,” he said.
It's well noted that this was a spiritual matter more than a political one.
As I mentioned yesterday, Paul wrote, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age" (Ephesians 6:12a).
Our real warfare is with these spirit entities, and the warfare is constant. We cannot imagine the extent to which this spiritual warfare is being waged in the universe around us.
When Daniel sought the Lord in fasting and prayer (spiritual weapons), an angelic messenger was immediately dispatched by God but was delayed. “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia” (Daniel 10:13).
Michael, a powerful archangel, came to aid this dear messenger, who faced opposition from the evil spirits who controlled Persia. This messenger was finally able to bring Daniel the message from God about events to come. It’s an interesting insight into the ongoing spiritual war that surrounds us.
Be Not Ignorant
Though we cannot see this spiritual warfare, we would do well to be aware that it is going on. Many times, we feel the flack—the impact, the byproduct of it. Often, this is the reason behind those feelings that we don’t understand or can’t define—perhaps a feeling of heaviness, depression, discouragement, despair, restlessness, or agitation. It’s possible that there is a spiritual force behind it, an impact from this ongoing spiritual war surrounding us.
Paul reminded the Corinthians that we are not ignorant of his [Satan’s] devices (2 Corinthians 2:11). To be aware of these battles is vital for us as Christians if we're going to maintain a life of victory. One of our problems is that we do not always recognize when Satan is attacking. And so we just go on enduring it rather than standing against it. We just bow our heads and go on being battered and beaten and feeling down. But we can resist it by "Recognizing," Resisting," and "Rejoicing."
"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7).
