Darwin's Not So Happy Birthday

This past Tuesday was Charles Darwin's birthday---had he been further evolved and was still living, he would have been 210 years old.

I wouldn't mention his B-Day except that the press said much about his "work" and "discoveries" this week, while generally refusing to cover the fact that more than 1000 credentialed, bonafide scientists have signed a letter of dissent regarding his theory.

Your kids in the classroom probably weren't told about the letter either, because "The letter" puts a damper on Chuck's birthday party.

Be informed.

The statement.

It began with a list of about 100 scientists back in 2001.

The list from the Discovery Institute was first issued as a way to show that credible scientists do doubt the popular---universally accepted in public education and elsewhere as fact---theory behind the development of life.

The statement, known as "A Scientific Dissent From Darwinism" was originally signed by about 100 credible scientists.

The statement reads:

"We are skeptical of claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life. Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged."

To sign the list, a person must "hold a Ph.D. in a scientific field such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or one of the natural sciences" or "they must hold an M.D. and serve as a professor of medicine."

Those who have signed the list make it clear they are doing so in the name of accurate science---and they have no political motivation.

Of course, most of us know "careful examination" is not even a fleeting thought as public teachers and professors not only teach Darwin's ideas as undisputed facts, but criticize, mock, and exclude from enlightened company, anyone who questions or disagrees----child, parent, professor or scientist.

In fact, the scientists say they initiated this list for that very reason.

"The statement is needed," they say, "because some supporters of Darwinism have tried to silence opponents of the theory."

Indeed they have. Whether it's because the instructors are uninformed or whether they're merely activists for Darwinism, the result has been the same: To silence anyone who disagrees.

This is always an import part of advancing so-called progressive ideas. Whether it's abortion, LGBTQ, same-sex marriage, socialism or Darwinism---silence the dissenters---it's settled---no more discussion.

The website with the signatures says this:

"In recent years there has been a concerted effort on the part of some supporters of modern Darwinism theory to deny the existence of scientific critics of Neo-Darwinism and to discourage open discussion of the scientific evidence for and against Neo-Darwinism. 'The Scientific Dissent From Darwinism' statement exists to correct the public record by showing that there are scientists who support an open examination of the evidence relating to modern Darwinian theory and who question whether Neo-Darwinism can satisfactorily explain the complexity and diversity of the natural world."

The consequences: "From Darwin to Hitler"...To 2019.

Many books have been written on the impact of Darwinism on Western culture. One of the best I've read is "From Darwin to Hitler" by Professor Richard Weikart.

Weikart is a professor at California State University, and is a senior fellow for the Center for Science and Culture of the Discovery Institute.

In this work, Richard Weikart explains the revolutionary impact Darwinism had on ethics and morality. He demonstrates that many leading Darwinian biologists and social thinkers in Germany believed that Darwinism overturned traditional Judeo-Christian and Enlightenment ethics, especially the view that human life is sacred. Many of these thinkers supported moral relativism, yet simultaneously exalted evolutionary ‘fitness’ (especially intelligence and health) to the highest arbiter of morality. Darwinism played a key role in the rise not only of eugenics, but also euthanasia, infanticide, abortion, and racial extermination. This was especially important in Germany since Hitler built his view of ethics on Darwinian principles, not on nihilism.

William Jennings Bryant was largely motivated in his fight against Darwin's theory, by concern over the moral implications of Darwinism. As a pacifist, Bryan was outraged by the Darwinian rhetoric of German militarists whom he held responsible for starting World War I.

Bryan was right. Darwin's thinking became a stepping stone for Hitler and World War II.

Bryan was mocked because of his position on Darwin's theory of evolution. That story has been told in hundreds of books and films.

But today in 2019, we see the results in real, tangible ways.

Many in the West view marriage as a quaint but outdated custom, while the idea of marriage for life is held by a diminishing minority.

In the minds of many, sex is solely for pleasure, and children are an inconvenience.

We have become the proverbial "frog in the kettle."

Weikart says, "Without realizing it, one of the inevitable consequences of Darwinism is a very real threat to the very existence of the Western European peoples who have embraced his teaching."

  • We have rejected Judeo-Christian values. Before Darwinism, the idea of the sanctity of life prevailed in European and western thought--- nowhere more than in the US. Churches spoke against murder, infanticide, abortion, and suicide. Now we have laws and policies to assist in suicide and enable abortion for any reason at any time during the pregnancy---now, even following birth.
Turning away from Judeo-Christian values have led us to celebrate barbarism.
  • Before Darwin, Paul explained in Romans, (ch.1) what happens when people reject God. Not only do they create pagan gods, but "For this reason, God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned with lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due."
  • There are now no restraints. Once you take God out of the picture, anything can be justified. Paul told the Romans and all who would follow, "And even as they did not retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind..."

Sadly, this reads like our daily news.

Weikart concludes his book with this:
"Darwinism by itself did not produce the Holocaust, but without Darwinism, especially in its social Darwinist and eugenics permutations, neither Hitler nor his Nazi followers would have...been able to convince themselves or their collaborators that one of the world's greatest atrocities was really morally praiseworthy....Darwinism succeeded in turning morality on its head."

Ironically; On October 15, 1827, Charles Darwin enrolled at Cambridge, Christ College in England. His father was suggesting he become a clergyman, "because that was a respectable profession" for someone of Darwin's upper-class background.

Long before Darwin, or Hitler, Isaiah (5:20) warned:

"Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter."
