The "Shield of the Americas" is a 2026 U.S.-led security initiative launched by President Donald Trump to create a multinational military and intelligence alliance targeting drug cartels, transnational crime, and foreign influence (specifically China) in the Western Hemisphere. Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was appointed as the special envoy to lead this coalition, which aims to coordinate with regional partners for increased security operations.
A closer look.
Be informed, not misled.
This is a few bullet points:
Key Aspects of the "Shield of the Americas" (as of March 2026):
- Purpose: To combat powerful drug cartels and narco-terrorists, and to curb Chinese influence in Latin America.
- Actionable Strategy: The initiative emphasizes using lethal force and intelligence sharing to destroy cartel networks, with Trump offering U.S. military support to partner nations.
- Partnerships: The alliance includes about 12-13 nations, primarily with center-to-hard-right governments, including Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Panama.
- Leadership: Kristi Noem was named Special Envoy to lead the efforts to "dismantle cartels".
- Context: The initiative acts as a new "Trump Corollary" to the Monroe Doctrine, aiming to secure the region from "hostile foreign influence".
- Initial Action: The U.S. and Ecuador conducted joint operations against organized crime groups in the Ecuadorian Amazon following the summit.
The alliance was unveiled during a summit at the Trump National Doral Miami Resort and Spa, with a focus on a "hardline" approach to security and immigration.
The New York Times ran a front-page article in which they said, "At the first Shield of the Americas summit in Florida on Saturday, President Trump said a new organization of Latin American and Caribbean countries that he called the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition would employ military force to defeat drug trafficking groups."
Speaking at the Trump National Doral Miami, his golf resort outside Miami, Mr. Trump said the “brand-new military coalition” would “eradicate the criminal cartels plaguing our region.”
He said the U.S. military was “knocking the [expletive] out of them, where we can, and we’re going to go heavier.”
Addressing the regional leaders, he added, “We need your help, you have to — just tell us where they are.”
The NYT continued:
The summit, held as the U.S. military is engaged in a war with Iran that is spreading across the Middle East, brought leaders from 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries together with senior officials from the Trump administration. So far, 17 countries have committed to joining the coalition.
U.S. officials said that the group would aggressively target cartels and organized crime across the Western Hemisphere — a central focus for Mr. Trump, who has embraced a vision of reasserting U.S. dominance in the region through what has been called the “Donroe Doctrine.”
“Just as we formed a coalition to eradicate ISIS in the Middle East, we must now do the same thing to eradicate the cartels at home,” Mr. Trump said.
The Times also noted that, "The one-day summit drew some of Mr. Trump’s staunchest allies, such as President Javier Milei of Argentina and President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador. The leaders of Bolivia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago also attended. (The Bahamas, Belize, Guatemala, Jamaica and Peru, while part of the coalition, were not represented at the event.)"
Several Trump administration heavyweights were also in attendance, among them the secretary of state, Marco Rubio; the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth; the treasury secretary, Scott Bessent; the commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick; and Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser. Kristi Noem, the recently dismissed homeland security secretary, was named a special envoy to the summit.
A new world order of commerce?
Trump is fundamentally reshaping the entire world order of commerce, taking out the worst of the anti-American and anti-Western regimes.
And, contrary to the Narrative of the Left, most of the world outside the transnational elite and our avowed enemies seems to be quite happy with these developments. The Middle Eastern countries are aligning with us, and in Latin America, quite a few leaders have joined with Trump's "Shield of the Americas."
It's way too early to know how all this will turn out, but if things go on as they have been, the realignment we are seeing now will be as significant as the fall of the Berlin Wall.
One thing is certain. It is driving the globalist transnationalists crazy.
Takeaway
What does this mean for the Christian?
All eyes are on Iran, and rightly so, given the scale and scope of the conflict.
But the world doesn't stop just because we have limited ability to pay attention to all the important things that are happening, and one of the most important right now is the imminent collapse of the Cuban regime.
It has been said, "When people lose their fear, dictatorships begin to fall."
The Cuban communist culture will soon collapse.
This is how things look for the Christians today in Cuba, according to "Open Doors" ministry:
Christians in Cuba must align with the country’s Communist agenda, and failure to do so can bring pressure and persecution.
Dissent is systemically suppressed in Cuba – something Christians know all too well. Those who speak out against the regime, including church leaders and Christian activists, risk arrest, smear campaigns, harassment, restrictions on movement, physical violence, and imprisonment.
To curb the church’s influence, the authorities routinely deny registration of new churches. This forces many to operate ‘illegally’, putting them at greater risk of persecution. Church activities, especially those benefiting local communities, are often deemed a threat to state interests, which brings scrutiny and surveillance. Sermons are frequently monitored to ensure they align with Communist values.
Permit denials, fines, confiscation of property, demolition, closures, and legal action – such penalties against churches and other Christian organisations are common under Cuba’s repressive rule.
Everything is about to change in Cuba and other oppressed countries.
I sincerely believe that God is giving us a reprieve to continue and accelerate His work.
"I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work," (John 9:4). This passage emphasizes seizing the opportunity to do God's work during one's lifetime, as the "day" represents the limited time for service before death or the end of opportunities ("night").
I see this realignment of nations as brilliant politics, but more importantly, as a time to lean into sharing the gospel in countries around the world, and certainly in our own country.
