VOX News reported, "Prince Harry and Meghan were all but upstaged by the Episcopal priest's fiery sermon."
Evangelicals, including pastors and their wives, have been praising the Bishop's sermon on social media and encouraging friends, followers and congregants to listen up.
I didn't watch the royal wedding but paid attention to who said what from video clips---including the 15-minute video of the Bishop's sermon.
It was a powerful presentation on love, but evangelicals should be informed as to what else the head of the US Episcopal Church is preaching before you give him your stamp of approval to friends and congregants.
Bishop Curry's wedding sermon is receiving rave reviews.
Vox reports, "Much has been written about Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle...But one of the most striking elements or the royal wedding was also among the most unexpected: the fiery, impassioned, and theologically driven sermon of American Episcopalian Bishop Michael Curry."
It was fiery, and it was impassioned.
The news media is describing it as "a far cry from what might be seen as the 'traditional' aristocratic Anglican sermon you might expect from a royal wedding....the sermon emphasized the power of love"...But the love Curry described was not necessarily the romantic kind.
The sermon may have been "theologically charged," but it wasn't theologically correct.
Drawing on the rhetoric of liberation theology---a 20th-century false theological teaching based on the teaching of Karl Marx---Bishop Curry characterized love as providing hope in the face of social injustice, even as it provides the blueprint for overturning it.
Paraphrasing the book of Amos he said:
When love is the way -- unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive, when love is the way. Then no child would go to bed hungry in this world ever again. When love is the way. We will let justice roll down like a mighty stream and righteousness like an ever flowing brook. When love is the way poverty will become history. When love is the way the earth will become a sanctuary. When love is the way we will lay down our swords and shields down by the riverside to study war no more. When love is the way there’s plenty good room, plenty good room for all of God’s children.
Cultural Marxism does not square up with Scripture regarding social justice, globalism, world peace, national sovereignty and a number of other divisive social and spiritual issues today. It is, however a new found mantra for the religious Left.
Bishop Curry's presentation was dynamic but rife with theological error.
The sermon was a call for "inclusion' in marriage," under the pretense of celebrating traditional marriage as only between one man and one woman.
Pink News celebrated the message and the messenger, reporting, "An unexpected star of the show has emerged during the Royal Wedding---the head of the US Episcopal Church Bishop Michael Curry."
The Bishop said, "When love has its way, the whole human family will come together," saying that love has to be "harnessed like fire" in order to make social change..."Imagine a world where love is the way."
Pink News says, "Curry drew some parallels to drag queen RuPaul as he told the couple, "whilst you at it, love yourself."
Curry also drew parallels to the message of former evangelical Mars Hill Pastor Rob Bell who kind of came out on February 15, 2015, when he and his wife said this to Oprah:
"One of the oldest aches in the bones of humanity is loneliness. Loneliness is not good for the world. Whoever you are, gay or straight, it is totally normal, natural and healthy to want someone to go through life with. It's central to our humanity. We want someone to go on the journey with."
Then Oprah asked in regard to same-sex relations: "When is the church going to get that?"
"We're moments away," Rob Bell said. "I think culture is already there and the church will continue to be even more irrelevant when it quotes letters from 2,000 years ago as their best defense, when you have in front of you flesh-and-blood people who are your brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles and co-workers and neighbors and they love each other and just want to go through life with someone."
Kristen Bell said: "There are churches who are moving forward and there are churches who are almost regressing and making it more of a battle."
Rob Bell and his wife have also called on evangelicals to repent for not affirming same-sex relationships and "marriage."
Pink proudly reported, "Curry has a clear record in favor of LGBT rights."
They're right. He does.
He is an oracle for the religious Left and homosexual activists.
In regard to the LGBTQ community, Curry told the New York Times: "God didn't make anyone to be a second-class citizen...He says, 'Come unto me all of you,' He didn't limit love. The dude, he got it right."
Not related to the wedding, but certainly related to Bishop Curry, who now heads the Episcopal Church in America, CBN says the church "aims to make the church's marriage ceremonies more gay-friendly."
The US Episcopal Church comes loosely under the governance of the Church of England, and consequently under the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The US Episcopal Church is dropping the terms "husband" and "wife" to find favor with the homosexual community.
The US church, now under the leadership of Curry, is responding to complaints that the language of the current liturgy is both offensive and exclusionary.
The Church of England leadership has warned Curry and the leaders of the US Episcopal Church that many conservatives will see these steps as completely unacceptable...warning the American church to avoid "irrevocably redefining marriage" through "railroading their new liturgical language into church proceedings."
England's Anglican Church may be dragging their feet a bit in regard to redefining marriage, but Curry's Episcopal Church is just moments away, apparently.
This matter is creating a split in the church, in both England and the US, which in turn is creating confusion in the message from the Anglican/Episcopal church.
The head of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, on one hand, continues to affirm the traditional definition of marriage as between one man and one woman.
However, last fall in an interview with GQ Magazine, Welby found himself unable to state what he actually believed.
When asked, he was unable to say whether or not he believed sodomy is sin.
He said, "You know very well that is a question I can't give a straight answer to."
He said, "I don't blanket condemnation and I haven't got a good answer to the question. Inherently, within myself, the things that seem to me to be absolutely central are around faithfulness, stability of relationships and loving relationships."
Consider this:
- With all due respect to the bishops---It isn't about how you feel within yourself. It's about what the Bibles says, regardless of how long ago it was written.
- A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. The Anglican/Episcopal church is double-minded.
- Quoting from a 2000-year-old letter that the religious Left consider irrelevant--- I Peter 3:18, "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit."
Jesus Christ did not die on a cross so people could be "faithful and create loving, stable relationships."
He died so that we can be forgiven for our sins and restored. While the blessings of faithfulness, stable relationships and loving relationships are certainly found within our personal relationship with Christ, that relationship directs us to live according to His Word, not bend Truth in an attempt to make it "relevant" to the culture.
