Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has launched another attack on America's "Electoral College" method of electing a president, by calling it a "scam" ---"affirmative action for rural voters."
She says the problem is that rural voters are "too white" and "too powerful in presidential elections."
Is it? Are they?
If it were only AOC trying to eliminate the Electoral College, I wouldn't mention it.
Several leading Democrat presidential candidates agree with her. They also want to "pack" the Supreme Court by increasing the number of justices.
Be informed.
AOC's not the only one.
Ocasio-Cortez said this week on social media that she hates the Electoral College, calling it a "scam" that effectively "weighs white voters over voters of color" making it nothing more than "affirmative action" for rural voters.
In her view, rural areas are too white and too powerful in presidential elections.
Democrat presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, who is closing the gap on leader Joe Biden, is one of several also calling for the abolition of the Electoral College.
At a broadcast town hall meeting at the historically black Jackson State University in Mississippi, Warren said, "Every vote matters and the way we can make that happen is that we can have a national voting, and that means get rid of the Electoral College."
She said,
"I believe we need a constitutional amendment that protects the right to vote for every American citizen and makes sure that vote gets counted." And she said "We need to put some muscle behind that, and we need to repeal every one of the voter suppression laws that is out there."
That's race-baiting. She should know better. But she's on the warpath with one thing in mind, the presidency of the United States of America. A noble end that justifies all the means.
Take a step back Elizabeth.
Appearing before Congress in 1979, National Urban League President Vernon Jordan presented how blacks really feel about the Electoral College.
Jordan said,
"Take away the Electoral College and the importance of that black vote melts away. Blacks, instead of being crucial to victory in major states, simply become 10% of the total electorate with reduced impact."
"The real issue," Jordan told Congress in 1979, "is not only one of how many black voters are located in which states, but where blacks can reasonably expect to build coalitions with other minorities and whites to achieve true justice and equality."
Tara Ross, who has written several books on the value of the Electoral College. says, "At the end of the day, charges of racism in our presidential election are simply silly. The Electoral College serves everyone. It does so by creating a careful balance between large states and small, urban areas and rural."
"In short," she says, "it creates a balance in our political system."
But the Left is not looking for balance of fairness. Or racial equality. Their deeds betray their words.
Why the Left really wants to abolish the Electoral College.
Perhaps New York voters outside of Ocasio Cortez's district can feel this pain: Upstate New York voters are constantly outvoted by New York City voters, who are very far-Left.
Closer to home. Washington State voters are always beaten on statewide elections by far-Left voters in Seattle and close in Puget Sound area. Ocasio-Cortez, I suspect, would find those Washingtonians living on the east side of the Cascades "too white and too powerful."
It's not only New York and Washington State, but a number of far-Left progressive states are the same. The big city dominates the statewide vote every time.
This would be true in Elizabeth's Massachusetts as well.
That's what these people who oppose the Electoral College want.
They want the presidency decided by a few very large, very far-Left cities via a popular vote---because everyone else is to white and too powerful.
If the College would be abolished, presidential candidates would camp out in mega states, with mega far left cities like New York City, LA, Seattle, Miami, maybe Dallas or Houston, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and DC.
As one large city dominates a state vote, a few large, far-Left states could dominate a national, presidential election.
This would take years because it would require a constitutional amendment. Clearly, they feel it's worth it to virtually lock up the White House using a few cities rather than "we the people."
There is also a move to create a coalition of states who are signing a compact to give all their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner. In 2016, that would have been Hillary. Colorado just became the 12th state to sign up.
This deal would take effect once states totaling 270 electoral votes (the amount needed to win the presidency) sign on. Colorado puts the count at 181.
These same "public servants" also want to "pack" the US Supreme Court.
Another ploy to grab power by these folks is to pack the Supreme Court.
Warren has been joined by Kamala Harris and Kristen Gillibrand (who doesn't have enough support to make the next debate) in pushing to expand the number of Justices on the Supreme Court. These three candidates say this would "depoliticize" the Court.
Sure it would. Can they do that? They can if they're in power. There is no set number constitutionally required for the Supreme Court---only that the Supreme Court exists.
Whether or not these politicians actually believe they can pull off these kinds of things, they know that it inspires the passions of the far-Left that is panicked by the thought that a President Trump could pick another Supreme Court Justice---or two.
The Left believes this kind of talk could get more people out to vote in the 2020 election.
As evangelicals and conservatives become more informed and aware, I pray it will.
When Jordan spoke to Congress back in 1979, he told the lawmakers that the Electoral College "forces candidates to deal with a broad variety of issues and thus requires a degree of responsibility that direct elections would weaken."
Looking at the issues the Left has put forward so far, it's clear that relieving their personal responsibility would help their cause.
Be Informed. Be Discerning. Be Vigilant. Be Prayerful.
