The Voter Identity Crisis

Why are we so quick to show our ID for a myriad of everyday, normal things we do, yet resist doing so for voting privileges?

If voter ID requirements truly threaten civil rights, as we are told by the Leftists, it follows that many other civil rights are also threatened.  Identification is needed throughout American society, including for transportation, accommodation, and housing — historical battlegrounds for civil rights.

Something is very wrong with the idea that voter ID is "oppressive."

About 8 out of 10 citizens believe voters should verify their identification.

Be informed, not misled.

The SAVE America Act would require documented proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo identification for voting in federal elections.  President Trump and Republicans support the legislation, and Americans overwhelmingly support voter ID, which is at the heart of the measure.  Democrats, on the other hand, overwhelmingly oppose the SAVE America Act and, by implication, the election integrity requirements it would implement.

Rep. Joe Morelle, who was a prominent opponent of the SAVE Act in the House, has stated: “This is an extremely dangerous bill that would make it harder — not easier — for eligible Americans to participate in our democracy.”

Bottom line: Democrats accuse the SAVE America Act of violating civil rights, particularly those of minorities.  Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said this with more inflammatory language: “I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, the SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow-type laws on the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate.”

No, it wouldn't.

The SAVE America Act’s voter ID requirement mirrors that of many other activities.  A photo ID is required to board an airplane and rent a car.  A photo ID is regularly required to stay at a hotel.  And a photo ID is required to purchase a home.

And you've got to have ID for banking.

Why is the Left so distraught over the notion of identifying yourself in order to cast a vote?

Everyone supports Voter ID except the elected Democrat "public servants" on Capitol Hill.

Both Pew and Gallup have found very strong support for voter ID.

A Pew Research Center survey found that 83% of Americans favor requiring government-issued photo ID to vote, with 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats in agreement; only 16% oppose it.

Gallup polling indicated 84% support for photo ID requirements, including 98% of Republicans, 84% of independents, and 67% of Democrats.

Separately, 83% back proof of citizenship for first-time voter registration.

Additional surveys from Napolitan News Service and The Center Square also reflect strong backing, according to the White House.

Hypocrisy

Fox News reports that "NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas noted, 'Voter ID rules do have wide public support, but the vast majority of Democrats on Capitol Hill oppose them.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sidestepped a question Monday about requiring two forms of ID to get paid for shoveling snow in the city — but not for voting — and said he was following the law.

CNN's Jake Tapper read a social media post from House Republicans questioning why New York City required two forms of ID to shovel, but no ID to vote.

"Here in New York City, we follow the law," Mamdani responded. "And it's federal law to require certain forms of identification in order for someone to actually be paid for this kind of a job. And so that's what we're asking for — two forms of identification. It's a long-standing city program; it's a long-standing city policy. And thanks to the hard work of DSNY, they've expanded their capacity for how many New Yorkers they can supervise at a time, now up to 1,800 per shift."

The mayor did not touch on the voter ID portion of the question.

And neither will any of the elected Democrats.

Takeaway

“Democrats have shut down DHS because they want to endanger our law enforcement officers and ICE agents by making them show ID,” Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) warns regarding the partial government shutdown led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

Democrats have caused a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by filibustering a bill to continue funding it, unless the funding bill contains provisions crippling and endangering U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents working to enforce federal immigration law.

Democrats are demanding that the funding bill not only provide funding, but also prohibit ICE agents from wearing masks and require them to wear IDs on their uniforms, which would enable violent, pro-illegal immigration activists to identify and target them.

“Republican leadership cannot cave to these radicals,” Rep. Steube says in a X.com post:

Democrats have shut down DHS because they want to endanger our law enforcement officers and ICE agents by making them show ID.

These are the same people who say voter ID is racist.  Republican leadership cannot cave to these radicals.

"They’re simply putting that there so that these officers can then be doxed,” Rep. Steube explains in a video from an interview embedded in his post:

You’ve seen these officers be doxed all across the nation. They’re staying in hotels, and all these people show up at the hotel, find out they’re staying there. And, it’s really happening in Minneapolis and some of these Democrat-run cities. No, absolutely not. They shouldn’t have to be forced to have their IDs.

They want ICE agents to have their IDs, but they don’t want voters who vote in our nation’s elections to have IDs and show that they’re actually citizens of our country to vote in our elections.

“The hypocrisy is beyond the pale,” Rep. Steube says.
