The Republic of Somaliland called on Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar to be extradited Saturday after Vice President J.D. Vance said she committed immigration fraud.

Vance said Friday that the "White House was certain Omar committed immigration fraud by allegedly marrying her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to facilitate his move to the U.S. in 2009." The Republic of Somaliland, a partially recognized state in the Horn of Africa, said Omar should be extradited rather than deported.

Corruption runs deep among some of our "public servants."

Be informed, not misled.

Omar's personal life.

“Deportation? Please, you’re just sending the princess back to her kingdom,” the country said on X. “Extradition? Say the word …”

VP Vance said he is looking into how to most effectively prosecute her case.

Vance declared Friday that the White House will “go after” Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar for alleged immigration fraud.

President Donald Trump and other conservatives have long accused Omar of marrying her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to facilitate his move to the U.S. in 2009.

Vance said on “The Benny Johnson Show” that the White House “definitely” believes Omar committed fraud, and they are actively looking into options on how to investigate and ultimately “go after” her for it.

The congresswoman allegedly married her first husband, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, in 2002, separated from him, and then married her brother, Elmi, according to a timeline published by the Daily Mail. She split from Elmi in 2011, reconciled with Hirsi, and had a third child with him.

Omar claimed that she and Elmi separated in 2011, though the divorce did not take place until 2017, according to the Daily Mail. She married Hirsi, her first husband, for a second time in 2018. The two divorced a second time after she allegedly had an affair with Democratic consultant Tim Mynett, according to the New York Post.

Omar denied the allegations that she married her brother, calling the accusations “bigoted lies.”

In August, The Post was first to report that DC-based doctor Beth Mynett had filed for divorce from her husband, Tim Mynett, alleging that he was carrying on an affair with Omar.

All the while, Omar’s campaign fund was paying Tim Mynett’s firm for work, including for travel.

Omar's professional life

During an appearance on “Face the Nation,” Omar told host Margaret Brennan it is “frustrating” to her that people do not acknowledge Minnesota’s Somali community is “upset” about the COVID relief fraud — which reportedly resulted in taxpayer money winding up in the hands of a Somali radical Islamic terrorist group. The scheme’s alleged perpetrators “stole nearly $1 billion” from a nonprofit that claimed to feed hungry schoolchildren, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer stated.

Brennan continued, “The Biden-era Justice Department called it the largest COVID fraud scheme in the country, and this was pocketing COVID-era welfare funds, more than a billion dollars in taxpayer money that was stolen,” Brennan told the Somali-born congresswoman. “Of the 87 people charged, all but eight are of Somali descent, and that has added to the spotlight being put specifically on your community. Why do you think this fraud was allowed to get so widespread?”

Later in the interview, Brennan noted: “One of the initial defenses by the organization at the heart of the fraud, Feeding Our Future, was to claim the probe was due to racism.”

“Do you think that this was all about negligence, or that it was, like, political fear of alienating the Somali community?” the CBS News host asked Omar.

“So you have to remember that the woman who led the program is a Caucasian woman, and that was her way of making sure that this would continue to happen by using whatever rhetoric that was available to her,” the congresswoman answered, referring to Feeding Our Future founder Aimee Bock.

A federal jury in March convicted Bock, along with her alleged chief accomplice, Somali restaurant owner Salim Said, on multiple charges in connection with the fraud scheme.

Takeaway

The City Journal summarized this heist of American wealth: "Minnesota is drowning in fraud. Billions in taxpayer dollars have been stolen during the administration of Governor Tim Walz alone. Democratic state officials, overseeing one of the most generous welfare regimes in the country, are asleep at the switch. And the media, duty-bound by progressive pieties, refuse to connect the dots."

In many cases, the fraud has allegedly been perpetrated by members of Minnesota’s sizeable Somali community. Federal counterterrorism sources confirm that millions of dollars in stolen funds have been sent back to Somalia, where they ultimately landed in the hands of the terror group Al-Shabaab. As one confidential source put it: “The largest funder of Al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer.”

According to financial disclosures filed in May 2025, covering the 2024 calendar year, Representative Ilhan Omar's household net worth was estimated to be about $30 million. This valuation was primarily tied to her then-husband, Tim Mynett, and his stake in a venture capital firm and a winery.

Forbes says Trump thinks she is worth $44 million.

The high valuation reflects a sharp increase from previous disclosures, leading to scrutiny of her financial reports, which suggested a 3,500% increase in wealth for her husband's business interests in a single year.

When first elected to Congress in 2018, Omar reported a negative net worth of approximately -$45,001.

"Extradite" sounds about right.
