President Donald Trump’s administration is ramping up global efforts to track and prevent leftist terrorism following the April attempt on his life in Washington, State Department officials are saying. 

The U.S. government now treats left-wing political violence as a global problem requiring a transnational response rather than isolated incidents, according to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott and two other department officials. The gunman arrested at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in an alleged attempt to kill Trump reflects rising insurrectionist trends from the left that the West must take seriously, the administration believes.

However, yesterday the Washington Post published an article titled "Many Americans think Trump assassination attempts were fake, survey finds."

Donald Trump has now survived more known assassination attempts than any other U.S. president. 

The gunman arrested at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is at least the sixth person apprehended while trying to kill Trump since 2016, a Daily Caller News Foundation analysis of media reports and court records found. The number of attempts is higher if counting plots foiled in their early stages, including those by Iran, ISIS terrorists, and a Wisconsin cultist. Barack Obama is a close second with five known attempts.

Violent actors have made attempts on U.S. presidents’ lives as early as Andrew Jackson in 1835, and four have succeeded. But over the past decade, Trump has endured an unprecedented wave of targeted violence, further chipping away at America’s ability to resolve political disputes peacefully. 

“Attempted murder is always a serious crime, but when the intended victim is the President of the United States, as well as other high-ranking members of the U.S. government, the potential consequences are far-reaching,” the Department of Justice (DOJ) wrote to a federal court Wednesday about Cole Allen, identified as the gunman who barged into the recent dinner with plans for a massacre. Allen “could have destabilized the entire federal government, given the number of high-ranking government officials present,” the DOJ added.

“It was, at its core, an anti-democratic act of political violence,” the DOJ said.

But the Washington Post said yesterday (I didn't link this because only paid subscribers have access to the story), "About 1 in 4 say the correspondent's dinner shooting was staged, the poll found, including roughly a third of Democrats, as conspiracy theories spread online."

About a thousand people at the dinner would disagree with the Post's poll.

President Trump is now taking global steps to thwart these attempts.

“From the United States to Germany to Spain, left-wing terrorists have targeted democratically elected political leaders in an attempt to undermine the will of the people, destabilize societies, and intimidate members of the public,” Pigott told the DCNF. “The State Department is actively tracking the rise in far-left political violence and is committed to identifying and disrupting terrorist networks that wage terror campaigns in service of a revolutionary political project.”

A State Department official familiar with the operations pointed to several recent incidents to establish the problem:

• Masked attackers beat a German right-wing politician in 2019
• An Italian anarchist group mailed a bomb to a defense contractor in 2022
• A leftist anarchist was caught preparing bombs to kill 50 people in the United Kingdom in 2023 
• The European Union found 21 attacks linked to leftist ideology in 2024, rivaling 24 attacks from jihadists, the State Department official noted.

The fact that leftist extremists increasingly make common cause with “pro-Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, and Iranian-aligned groups” makes matters worse for the West, the official said.

Trump’s State Department has pursued greater collaboration with other countries to counter the threat, the official told the DCNF. State Department leaders convened with foreign partners to improve data-sharing with the U.S. and prompted them to use tools similar to the department’s “Rewards for Justice” program to seek information from the public, the official said.

I understand the global scope of terrorism, but when the US becomes involved in anything "globally," I think we should be vigilant.

I personally trust that Trump has our country's best interests at heart, but will the next president?

Would Kamala Harris? Or AOC? Or?

“This kind of targeted political violence is not unique to the United States but is a global phenomenon and a preferred tactic of radical far-left and anarchist networks,” a State Department counterterrorism expert said, referring to the D.C. shooting.

“These networks inspire and recruit violent actors to not only intimidate, maim, or kill high-profile individuals but to interrupt supply chains, sabotage critical infrastructure, and otherwise exhaust law enforcement capacity through criminal and terrorist acts,” the analyst said. “Such actions all serve the same purpose: to break down law and order, undermine the foundations of Western societies, and incite insurrection against elected governments.”

• Teachings on Law and Order: The Bible teaches against breaking law and order, instructing believers to submit to governing authorities as they are ordained by God (Romans 13:1-2). It views breaking the law as sin, encourages peaceful obedience, and warns that those who disobey will incur judgment.
• Submission to Authorities: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God" (Romans 13:1). Resisting authority is viewed as resisting God's ordinance. 
• Purpose of Law: Rulers are designed to be a terror to evil works, not good ones, acting as "the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil" (Romans 13:4).
