A Seared Conscience and its Consequences

Last Friday, the Associated Press reported that the judge in the Lindsay Clancy case declared a mistrial after the 12 jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision on whether the Massachusetts mom was criminally responsible for taking the lives of her three children.

The mistrial declaration came after the top court in Massachusetts denied the defense's petition to stop the judge from declaring a mistrial.

The mistrial, on the seventh day of deliberations, leaves the case unresolved and allows prosecutors to try Clancy again.

This shook most normal people in the nation --- particularly parents.

How could a mom systematically kill each of her three children by systematically strangling each child?

Some considerations.

American Family Network reports that earlier on Friday, Judge William Sullivan announced in court that jurors — now in their seventh day of deliberations — sent a third note saying they couldn't reach a unanimous decision on whether the Massachusetts mother is criminally responsible for killing her three young children in 2023.

The deliberations had taken a dramatic turn late in the week when the foreperson told the judge that a lone holdout was refusing to follow the court’s instructions about reasonable doubt. It offered a rare glimpse of the conflict inside the jury room and prompted Clancy’s attorney to demand the juror be kicked off the case.

The trial has generated intense interest for more than a month, deeply dividing the public and drawing attention to issues around maternal mental health after childbirth. Clancy’s attorney said she was suffering from a rare condition called postpartum psychosis when she strangled her kids, the youngest just 8 months old, then tried to take her own life.

The New York Post says, "Ace Clancy lawyer Kevin Reddington plans to file a motion to try to set aside the jury outcome and get a judge to rule his client not guilty by reason of temporary insanity."

After the last note on Friday, as the jurors were about to be brought back into the courtroom, Reddington dramatically asked Sullivan to hold off on declaring a mistrial so that he could seek an emergency appeal based on one of the notes.

A new trial date could be set at the next hearing.

On Friday, Reddington asked that the second trial proceed in two weeks, but Sullivan said they could aim for a new trial in late fall, at the earliest.

Voices in the soul

At trial, Reddington asked the jurors to find the 36-year-old Duxbury, Mass., mom not guilty by reason of temporary insanity on the grounds that she was in the throes of severe postpartum psychosis and heard a hallucinatory voice commanding her to carry out the killings and to kill herself.

Of the many shocks of this news story, none was greater than when women began showing up to demonstrate for the mother who killed her children.

The GoFundMe account set up for her by the activists has already received hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact, they have opened a second account.

I understand people suffer from mental illness. Teenagers in particular suffer from suicidal thoughts. I have talked and prayed with a good number of them in my life.  

I also understand that some people use mental illness as an escape to avoid the consequences of their actions.

I was a pastor for a long time. As a pastor, you see it all.

If she were to be found not guilty by reason of insanity at a second trial, she would be indefinitely committed to a mental institution and only freed once doctors and a judge found she was no longer a risk to herself and to others.

If she were convicted of first-degree murder, she would be imprisoned for life without the possibility of parole.

Takeaway

• All human life possesses inherent value because it is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).
• Scriptures present God as uniquely fashioning and valuing human life at its earliest, most vulnerable prenatal stages (Psalm 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:5). 
• Once a society legally and culturally redefines the unborn child as less than a person, it shifts the criteria for human worth from inherent being (created by God) to utilitarian function (viability, independence, or "quality of life"). 
• Once worth is tied to utility, the standard naturally slides to the other end of life. If an unborn child can be terminated because they lack independence or face a difficult life, the same logic easily applies to the elderly, the disabled, or the terminally ill via assisted suicide.

The Bible explicitly outlines how the human conscience can become desensitized through repeated, normalized sin.

• In Ephesians 4:19, Paul describes people who, "having lost all sensitivity, have given themselves over" to systemic corruption.
• In 1 Timothy 4:2, the Bible warns of those whose "consciences are seared as with a hot iron." A seared conscience loses its ability to feel spiritual pain, conviction, or revulsion.
• Abortion over decades has acted as that "hot iron" on the public conscience. By normalizing the termination of millions of unborn lives, the collective conscience became numb to the shedding of innocent blood, leaving society less equipped to feel moral outrage when faced with legalized assisted suicide or rising rates of violence.

Calling "Evil Good and Good Evil."

• The prophet Isaiah captured this truth. Linguistic and moral inversion that occurs when a society drifts from biblical standards: "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light to darkness..." (Isaiah 5:20).
• Killing becomes framed linguistically not as taking a life, but as an act of personal autonomy, liberty, or healthcare.
• Similarly reframed using compassionate language like "death with dignity" or "mercy killing"

The consequence, according to Scripture, is that when a public or individual conscience accepts the euphemistic reframing of one form of death (abortion), it becomes culturally acceptable to other forms of death under the same guise of "compassion" or "rights."

Scripture consistently shows that sin is never stationary; it is progressive and expanding. 

And always leads to death. Spiritually and physically.
