Is Voter ID Really Controversial Among Minorities?

Last week, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., warned that if House Republicans try to jam voter ID legislation into the Trump-backed funding deal, it would be dead on arrival in the Senate.

Why is he so afraid of voter ID?

Minorities support it.

Be informed, not misled.

They’re demanding that the five-bill funding package, which stripped out the controversial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spending bill in favor of a two-week funding extension, also include the House Republicans’ updated Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, dubbed the SAVE America Act.

Fox News reported last week, "But doing so is a bridge too far for Schumer. The top Senate Democrat argued that the legislation, which has been sitting on the shelf in the House for months, is 'reminiscent of Jim Crow-era laws,' and would act as a means to suppress voters rather than encourage more secure elections."

Schumer said, "I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, the SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow-type laws to the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate. "

He said, "It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to. If House Republicans add the SAVE Act to the bipartisan appropriations package,   it will lead to another prolonged Trump government shutdown," he continued.

The updated version of the SAVE Act would require that people present photo identification before voting, require states to obtain proof of citizenship in-person when people register to vote, and remove non-citizens from voter rolls.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., who is leading the push to attach the voter ID legislation to the funding package, countered Schumer's accusation in a post on X.

"If you are a minority that wants a voter ID, apparently you are for racist policies according to [Schumer]," she said.

Minorities want voter ID. What is Schumer thinking?

Despite fearmongering by Democrats, such as Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who claim requiring a photo ID to vote is racist, the voter integrity requirement has strong support among minorities, CNN Data Analyst Harry Enten noted on Tuesday.

“What’s the racial breakdown on this, right? Because I think a lot of people make the argument that people of color, non-white Americans have a harder time procuring a photo ID to vote,” Enten asked - before reporting Pew Research findings:

  • 82% of Latinos favor photo ID to vote.
  • 76% of black Americans favor photo ID to vote.
  • 85% of white people favor photo ID to vote.
  • 83% of all U.S. adults favor photo ID to vote.

“Normally, you might expect there’d be a big divide by party, with Republicans really for it and Democrats really against it – but not really, here,” Enten said, noting that even 71% of Democrats support requiring a photo ID to vote."

Total support for requiring photo ID to vote has been “north of 75%” for years, Enten said, citing Pew surveys going back to 2018.

“So the bottom line is this: voter ID is not controversial in this country. It is not controversial by party, and it is not controversial by race,” Enten explained.

“The vast majority of Americans agree with Nicki Minaj that, in fact you should have a photo ID to be able to vote,” Enten said, vindicating the star rapper who drew liberal backlash Sunday when she touted the photo ID requirement in a social media post.

“What sensible forward thinking cutting edge leading nation is having a DEBATE on whether or not there should be VOTER ID?!?!!!! Like?!?!? They’re actually fighting NOT to have ppl present ID while voting for your leaders!!!!! Do you get it?!?!!!! Do you get it now?!?!!!”

Enten’s data is drawn from a Pew Research study of U.S. adults conducted August 4-10, 2025.

Other related findings from the 2025 Pew poll include:

  • 84% support requiring electronic voting machines to print a paper backup of a voter’s ballot.
  • 80% support making early, in-person voting available for at least two weeks prior to the election.
  • While 58% of all those polled favor allowing voters to cast ballots by mail, only 32% of Republicans support voting by mail, compared to 83% of Democrats.
  • In 2024, Trump voters were more likely to vote in person on Election Day (38%) than were voters who cast their ballots for Democrat Kamala Harris (29%).

Takeaway

RE voting by mail.

In 2020, Ken Paxton, Attorney General of Texas, wrote a compelling article regarding mail-in ballots. This is some of what he wrote:

Our democracy is threatened, this time by way of the post office. Democrats across the nation are pushing mail-in ballots for every voter in November. Not wanting to let the crisis caused by COVID-19 go to waste, they’ve disguised their plot to manipulate the integrity of our election system by arguing that voters fear contracting COVID-19 if they physically show up to the polls. Democrat leadership clearly wants non-citizens to vote, which is ironic since they also claim to be concerned about foreign influence over our elections. The Left is willing to mar our democracy for a chance at winning at the ballot box. That is simply un-American.

It is also no secret that both sides of the political aisle have long agreed that voting by mail-in ballot increases the likelihood of fraud. During a 2004 Congressional hearing, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-NY, said, “In my experience in New York, paper ballots are extremely susceptible to fraud. I could show you experience which would make your head spin.” Just two years ago in a legislative hearing in Austin, a prosecutor from South Texas (and registered Democrat) testified: “Any time you have ballots that are outside the polling location, you’re going to have fraud…I would never recommend everyone voting by mail – it invites fraud.”

In Texas, to prevent fraud, we must show an ID when we vote just as we are required to show a form of ID at the airport, government buildings, financial institutions, and during many other daily activities. But there is no effective way for election officials to ensure that mail-in ballots are not requested fraudulently. Just as credit card skimmers can steal your financial information, vote harvesters can easily collect “authentic” signatures under false pretenses and steal your vote. During the 2018 primary, an anonymous video surfaced that appears to show how easily a Houston-area campaign worker collected a ballot application and signature from a voter in less than 20 seconds.  After providing her signature, the voter asked the worker, “Is this legal, what you’re doing?” The worker replied, “Yes, ma’am, we’ve done 400 already.”

In conclusion, Texas A/G Paxton said this:

Politically-motivated groups want to scare us into allowing what amounts to unlimited vote-by-mail. In doing so, they are stealing your right to vote. Democrats distract the public with talk of foreign involvement in our elections while they are brazenly creating election interference themselves. If we willfully compromise the integrity of our election process, we are threatening the future of our country as we know it. Let’s work together to stop them and keep our elections safe, fair, and honest.
