WA Lawyers Protest Mandatory Support of Redefining Marriage

Christian and conservative lawyers in Washington State are taking action against the Washington State Bar Association.

It is mandatory that all lawyers who wish to practice law in Washington State, be current, dues paying members of the WSBA. The WSBA has recently taken a position on marriage that is unacceptable and contrary to that of Christian conservative members and a growing number of them are taking action against their association.

Here's what has happened and what Christian, conservative, principled lawyers are doing about it.

On September 20, the WSBA Board of Governors voted to support the YES Campaign on R-74--supporting the redefining of marriage.

However, this does not represent the position of a growing number of WA State lawyers who are required to be members and pay dues.

This issue first surfaced during the House of Representatives hearing on Marriage Bill 6239 last Spring. I was in the hearing room when a spokesperson from WSBA went on the record in favor of Bill 6239 on behalf the WSBA membership.

Representative Matt Shea, who was serving on the hearings committee, immediately questioned the spokesperson, asking if membership was mandatory for lawyers in WA State.

Yes it is, was the answer.

Rep. Shea then proceeded to tell the spokesperson that he (Shea) was a current member because he had to be and that the association did not represent his position. Shea was strong and direct. It's all on the record. The spokesperson sat with his head down.

Rep. Jamie Pederson, one of the sponsors of the bill, smirked.

Now Christian conservative lawyers are taking action.

They are demanding, with precedent, that the WSBA refund their dues and they are publicly denouncing the WSBA position on marriage.

Bradley Abramson, with Alliance Defending Freedom is assisting Washington State lawyers who want to join the opposition.

You may contact Bradley at babramson@alliancedefendingfreedom.org .

If you are a lawyer in WA. State please consider joining this group, if you have not already done so. If you are not a lawyer, but know Christian lawyers in your church and community be sure they are aware of this effort.

  2. This is where we go when Christians refuse to stand up for what is right....thru fear of retribution from the mockers of Christ.....then the bullies among them take our God given "turf"...Yale University, the Presbyterian Church, our schools. "Stand...." in the LORD Paul says in Philippians 4 and "be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."

  4. 12:23 I see it differently. There are some good lawyers who are not fearful of taking a stand for wha tis right.

The problem is that the so called "Christian" lawyers, etc. are NOT standing up for what is right but what is completely un-Biblical and anti-God.

God is clear - He alone joins a man and one or more women (read your Bible if you have any questions on God's view of polygamy) in marriage. The State has NOTHING to do with marriage - and simply have and are enacting a partnership contract law (which is why, as an example, you go to court to terminate the contract (divorce) just like any other partnership contract)and calling this marriage - but we Bible Believers know that is simply a meaningless word - and we could care less what the State does in this regard because God never gave the State authority to create a genuine marriage.

So the so called Christian lawyers are engaging in anti-God and irrational, ignorant and silly behavior that is completely contrary to reality. This is where Evangelical leaders are seen to have led the flock astray and deceiving many they too have become shrouded in darkness of their own self-righteousness and hypocrisy to the extent that many now support an anti-Christ Satanic priest to be the president of the United States.

Truly we are living at the end of the age as Satan has swept so many stars to earth and Jesus' return is drawing nigh.

    Sincerely,
    In the Lord Jesus Christ

I agree God says what marriage is. Gary has consistently made that point over and over again, as have I.

These lawyers are taking a stand to not be associated with this state driven contract or to be seen as promoting or accepting of this lifestyle. What's the problem?

We must take a stand in our culture, God punishes national as well as personal sins, as the Bible clearly demonstrates.

As to voting, we are to be light in a dark world. You would advocate what? Not voting, putting our head in the sand, closing our eyes and maybe... it'll all go away, rightttttt....

You can pontificate all you want, but until you're willing to put yourself on the line and defend the little children who'll be harmed by this detestable behavior and prevented from coming to our Lord, do us all a favor.

      Don't be one of them.

  6. Isn't any attempt to redefine marriage an attack against the religion of prople whose conscience has by the grace of God been turned to seek to serve the Lord who defined it in the beginning?

So what is the state doing in getting mixed up in this matter?

Isn't there supposed to be some kind of separation between church and state?
It seems to me that the state has tresspassed in this matter.

They would have been wise to steer clear of such religious affairs.

  7. Here is a trend that has begun with the deception of gay marriage. All Christians will ultimately be confronted with this issue, even though our electorate states otherwise. The confrontation will come through my children's school and possibly be suspended, lawyers in this case, my job or even college I attended because it was a fully accredited Christian University. They wont accept my education when qualifying for a job. As a preacher having marriage seminars and gays demanding I include them or bringing me to court about it and forcing me to. Wonder what is next? The blindness that plagued the sodomites in Genesis when going after the angels visiting Lot is the same blindness occuring today about their sin.
