WA Lawyers Protest Mandatory Support of Redefining Marriage

Christian and conservative lawyers in Washington State are taking action against the Washington State Bar Association.

It is mandatory that all lawyers who wish to practice law in Washington State, be current, dues paying members of the WSBA. The WSBA has recently taken a position on marriage that is unacceptable and contrary to that of Christian conservative members and a growing number of them are taking action against their association.

Here's what has happened and what Christian, conservative, principled lawyers are doing about it.

On September 20, the WSBA Board of Governors voted to support the YES Campaign on R-74--supporting the redefining of marriage.

However, this does not represent the position of a growing number of WA State lawyers who are required to be members and pay dues.

This issue first surfaced during the House of Representatives hearing on Marriage Bill 6239 last Spring. I was in the hearing room when a spokesperson from WSBA went on the record in favor of Bill 6239 on behalf the WSBA membership.

Representative Matt Shea, who was serving on the hearings committee, immediately questioned the spokesperson, asking if membership was mandatory for lawyers in WA State.

Yes it is, was the answer.

Rep. Shea then proceeded to tell the spokesperson that he (Shea) was a current member because he had to be and that the association did not represent his position. Shea was strong and direct. It's all on the record. The spokesperson sat with his head down.

Rep. Jamie Pederson, one of the sponsors of the bill, smirked.

Now Christian conservative lawyers are taking action.

They are demanding, with precedent, that the WSBA refund their dues and they are publicly denouncing the WSBA position on marriage.

Bradley Abramson, with Alliance Defending Freedom is assisting Washington State lawyers who want to join the opposition.
