The Trump administration is set to enhance election security after announcing that the Department of Justice will deploy a record 1,000 election monitors nationwide for the November midterm elections.
Eric Daugherty recently wrote on X this week: "IT'S OFFICIAL: DOJ Assistant AG Harmeet Dhillon is surging 1,000 election monitors to CLOSELY WATCH the 2026 midterms and guard against fraud... There's nothing to hide, unless you're CHEATING."

Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon announced that the election monitors will be disbursed nationwide to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act. With election security concerns at an all-time high, the 1,000-person force will nearly quadruple the total number of enlisted monitors for the midterms, according to CBS News. The total will even dwarf that of the 714 sent in 2024 to ensure compliance with federal election laws.
CBS News reported, "Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, made the announcement in remarks to Bloomberg on Monday."
CBS continued:
The Civil Rights Division has long sent out monitors to polling places throughout the country to ensure compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act. That law prohibits discrimination in voting and ensures voters are not intimidated or otherwise prevented from casting a ballot on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, or another protected class.
Historically, the Justice Department's own Civil Rights Division attorneys and other staff have served as monitors, with some assistance from U.S. Attorney's Offices to help augment the numbers.
In the most recent midterm election in 2022, a DOJ official told CBS News there were 289 people sent to polling places.
The 2024 presidential election involved a much larger effort, with the department sending 714 people to monitor compliance with federal voting laws across 27 states in 86 jurisdictions, the DOJ official said.
CBS pivots.
"It remains unclear how the Justice Department will be able to achieve sending 1,000 monitors for the upcoming election, an effort that requires an extraordinary amount of planning and preparation."
"The Civil Rights Division under the Trump administration has been largely gutted. More than 70% of its career staff took early retirement or resigned amid concerns about changes to its mission under Dhillon's leadership. Although she has since recruited more attorneys, it remains understaffed."
It's interesting to see how quickly CBS changes course from reporting to speculating.
A DOJ spokesperson told CBS News that the department will seek volunteers from federal employees for the poll-monitoring effort. A department official added that the recruitment will target DOJ employees, including people in U.S. Attorney's Offices.
I think it's safe to say Trump will have at least 1000 monitors in the field come election time. CBS is concerned, not that the President will fail, but that he will succeed.
Then CBS assured the Left with a little hope: "A full list of locations is expected to be made public once the primaries are concluded. On Tuesday, the Justice Department announced it was sending monitors to polling places for primary elections in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Laramie County, Wyoming."
CBS is not the only network trying to undermine efforts to monitor the November elections. But they seem to be the most aggressive:

While it is longstanding practice for the DOJ to send monitors to polling places, some states are more suspicious this year, given the 31 lawsuits the Civil Rights Division has filed seeking states' unredacted voter data. The division has said it wants to ensure each state's rolls are clean, and that noncitizens are not registered. The states argue the suits are an effort to cast doubt on the integrity of the election process itself. The government has not prevailed in a single lawsuit so far, with judges blocking the requests for data in 23 cases to date.
The Department of Homeland Security, meanwhile, wants to use the voter information to carry out criminal and immigration enforcement.
President Trump, for his part, has repeatedly refused to acknowledge that he lost the 2020 election, and claimed without evidence that it was stolen. The FBI has since launched a number of criminal investigations related to the 2020 election results, including in Fulton County, Georgia, and in Arizona.
Recently, Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes filed a public records request in the hopes of learning why the DOJ was deploying monitors in three counties to monitor its primary election.
I think he knows why.

For years, Americans have been told that concerns about noncitizens voting are a myth, a right-wing talking point unworthy of serious attention. However, California’s own Secretary of State and Attorney General have proven otherwise, not by admitting the state has no idea whether, or how often, it’s even happening, but because the state isn’t bothering to track it.
A few weeks ago, the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) submitted two California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests — one to the California Secretary of State and one to CA Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office — seeking records on how the state maintains the integrity of its voter rolls. The Attorney General’s office took an extension, ultimately responding on August 10.
The Secretary of State’s office responded first, but refused to provide any records responsive to our request. According to its answer, the statewide voter registration system simply “does not contain” a specific cancellation reason for non-citizenship. In other words, the state cannot tell us how many noncitizens have ever been removed from its voter rolls — because it doesn’t keep that information at all.
In other words, the end is so noble that it justifies the means.
